Divorce is Awful I know I’m not unique. I’m not the first person to go through this. I was exhausted, it happens after being stuck in a lengthy expensive litigation process and it’s also a little bit tiring being a sick neurodiverse person on the waitlist for neurosurgery who is also the sole caregiver to teenagers with disabilities. In trying to extract us from one unstable situation I was left navigating another and the process took everything. I had given up on feeling safe. I was ill I was in debt Beyond burnt out How was I going to refinance and buy out the other party? Impossible. And with that came various scenarios to seriously consider. Rent that costs more than my mortgage? If I can’t refinance on my loan now, what loan could I afford then? What property could I afford that could fit all of us? That has the proximity that allows me to keep my job? Are we going to have to move far away? Are we going to end up living out of a car like so many other families that you see? The fear when you look around and you know with absolute certainty how close you are to the edge is crushing. Housing insecurity is no joke. I knew enough to expect nothing. I had faced banks and brokers before. I had run out of options. But then a family member connected me to Sarah. She doesn’t work for any big corporations. She understood my situation. In an industry that you don’t expect it. Here it was. Genuine Humanity. From a mortgage broker. Huh. Instead of the fake smiles, fast talking, and a hard sales pitch, here was just one human being seeing another had fallen over into the mud and Sarah reached out to help me up. Holding my hand. Through it all. Being so much more than the situation called for. Or maybe exactly what the situation called for. I cannot understate my appreciation for her empathy throughout this whole process. She is kind. Infinitely patient with my confusion and chaos. My hellish mess was dumped into her lap and she worked the problem. Problems. Plural. She knows people. She networked with accountants and lawyers and the intimidating bank people. Worked tirelessly and quickly while also taking as much off my plate as possible. Answering emails and texts at random times. Decoding my long rambling emotional tangents for useful information. Completing ginormous amounts of paperwork. Also (this was one of my admin favourites), as much as she could, sending me things that I could easily sign on my phone. No downloading any new apps or making it complicated. Open it. Sign here. It registers that the document has been signed. I didn’t even have to send it back! In all of this, her communication remained flawless. If she ever felt frustrated with me, I never knew about it, and I am frustrating to deal with. I will try your patience. Trust me. I have heard the reviews. Sainthood for Sarah is what I’m hinting at. She ensured that deadlines were met, momentum was never lost, she organised and conciliated, never losing focus. Ensuring that I could refinance. Everything was set up with the bank. The new loan system made as simple and easy as possible. My children and I can remain safely in our home. We can afford our home. We have housing security. Thats life changing. Not everyone gets to say that.
